FEAP meeting with Commissioner Kadis – Consumer information and caviar labelling
Brussels, 3 September 2026 – On 3 September, FEAP joined the Follow the Fish movement, Oceana, Conxemar, Fish Tales, FEDEPESCA and LIFE, together with MEPs Isabelle Le Callennec and Eric Sargiacomo, in a meeting with Commissioner Kadis on improving consumer information for seafood.
The discussion focused on the need to revise the CMO Regulation to ensure that essential information – including species, origin and production/fishing method – is available for all seafood products, including prepared and preserved products and food-service.
FEAP raised the specific issue of caviar labelling as a concrete example of the current gap. Caviar is outside the CMO’s specific consumer-information provisions, while imported caviar can be repacked in the EU and sold without the actual origin of the caviar being sufficiently clear to consumers, creating an unfair competitive situation for EU producers.
The meeting was a useful opportunity to highlight the importance of clear and meaningful consumer information and a level playing field for European aquaculture.
