The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) has provided its official response to the European Commission’s Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture, endorsing the initiative as a timely and essential opportunity to reverse decades of stagnation in EU finfish farming, while warning that the Vision will fail unless it confronts the root causes of the sector’s decline. FEAP sets out five core elements the Vision must include: a clear definition of a desired future state, a binding EU aquaculture production target for finfish by 2040, a genuine analysis of fundamental challenges, principles for cross-administrative coordination, and a high-level policy implementation pathway with performance indicators.

FEAP calls for accurate seafood labelling to protect consumer trust and European aquaculture /2025/11/03/feap-calls-for-accurate-seafood-labelling-to-protect-consumer-trust-and-european-aquaculture/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 10:11:47 +0000 /?p=10479 The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) draws attention to a growing concern in international seafood markets regarding the mislabelling of fish species, particularly the use of the generic term seabass for products that are not European seabass but seek to benefit from the latter’s established reputation and market value. Recent market observations (see picture) have revealed that barramundi (Lates calcarifer), a fish species captured and farmed in the Indo-Pacific region, is often marketed simply as seabass in several Asian and Middle East countries. Read more

New Life Cycle Assessment Study of Fish Boxes in Cold Chain Logistics – What It Means for Fish Farmers /2025/08/12/new-life-cycle-assessment-study-of-fish-boxes-in-cold-chain-logistics-what-it-means-for-fish-farmers/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 07:01:22 +0000 /?p=10320 FEAP is taking part to a collaborative effort in analysis of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of fish boxes in cold chain logistics. This study, led by RDC Environment, brings crucial insights for Europe’s fish farmers, as the choice of packaging has a direct impact on product quality, transport efficiency, and environmental footprint.

The study shows that expanded polystyrene (EPS) offers:
– The lowest climate and environmental impact
– The best cold-chain performance, helping maintain fish freshness and reduce spoilage
– A reliable and cost-efficient option without the infrastructure burden of reuse

Vision for Agriculture and Food /2025/02/21/vision-for-agriculture-and-food/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 08:54:17 +0000 /?p=9969 The EC has published its Vision for agriculture and food, a document aiming at fostering trust and dialogue across the entire value chain within the EU and globally. The Vision emphasises close engagement with relevant institutions, farmers, food chain operators, and civil society at local and regional levels, addressing their concerns and ideas. FEAP and the EUseafood alliance (EUsea) partners (EAPO, AIPCE, CEP, EUROPECHE) have pushed for a consistant integration of aquatic food production, both wild caught and farmed, as a pillar of European food sovereignty. FEAP and its partners will ensure that this vision is in line with the upcoming European Ocean Pacts and its preparatory dialogues.
